Is My Child Gifted?

What if I think my child is Gifted?

  • Anyone who sees characteristics indicative of a Gifted child can refer them for an evaluation for the Gifted program in their school district. Parents, teachers, coaches, or anyone having knowledge of the child's abilities may refer a child for a Gifted evaluation.

  • Once the referral is made, the school gathers data.  Parents may also provide data from outside sources.  Once parental permission is granted, students may be evaluated.  Districts often provide free evaluations, but  districts also accept private evaluations as long as they are provided by a Licensed School Psychometrist.

  • Students are then given an individual test of intelligence. This evaluation along with other evidence gathered will be used to make the determination of whether or not the student qualifies for the Gifted program.

  • Once a student is ruled eligible for the Gifted program, they will always be eligible in the state of Mississippi.

  • Yes, children can be Gifted and have Dyslexia, other Learning Disabilities, or other conditions, such as ADHD. How wonderful!

Importance of a Proper Evaluation

Gifted Evaluation

It is important to remember that no single evaluation instrument adequately identifies gifted students. In other words, the same test should not be given to every student. Some students are more verbal than others. Some are more non-verbal or "hands-on". A variety of tests are available. Which type of test would be most appropriate for your child?
